Refrigerant Change 2025: A2L Transition Explained
As of 2025, the HVAC industry is transitioning to new A2L refrigerants under federal environmental
mandates. This change impacts both homeowners and contractors as older refrigerants like R-410A are
phased out. Two main A2L refrigerants emerging in the U.S. market are R-32 and R-454B.
The quick basics are that your AC will work the same as usual, the new refrigerant is mildly flammable so systems have a few design changes like leak detection systems. Our costs have also increased from our distributors leading to higher prices (dont be fooled, $8000 for a basic AC is still a rip off, even $7000 in many cases. Yet some of our competitors around Naperville, Plainfield, Joliet, Shorewood and New Lenox think that its reasonable if you don't know any better.
R-32 vs R-454B: Which Is Better?
Both R-32 and R-454B are considered A2L refrigerants - meaning they have low global warming potential
(GWP) and low flammability. But there are key differences:
- R-32 has a GWP of 675 vs R-454B's 466. While R-454B is lower, R-32 is used in higher efficiency systems,
often making up the difference.
- R-32 systems are simpler to service since R-32 is a single-component refrigerant, unlike the blend R-454B.
- R-32 is more widely adopted globally, which may make parts, training, and replacement components easier
to obtain long-term.
- R-32 generally supports higher energy efficiency ratios (EER), saving you more on your energy bills over
time.
At Honest HVAC Services, we lean toward R-32 for its simplicity, performance, and availability.
Refrigerant Pricing & Sales Tactics: What You Should Watch For
With this refrigerant switch, some HVAC companies are using scare tactics to overcharge customers -
claiming urgent needs to 'upgrade your whole system' or inflating refrigerant costs.
